Long Distance Moving Checklist for a Michigan Move
A week-by-week plan for booking movers, packing safely and managing delivery anywhere across Michigan.
Long Distance Moving Checklist: Michigan Planning Guide
Moving a household or apartment across Michigan takes more than choosing a date and packing boxes. This Michigan long-distance moving checklist covers the work from early decluttering through final delivery. You will learn when to contact movers, what information an estimate should include, how to pack and label your belongings, and what to check before signing the delivery paperwork.
8 to 12 Weeks Out: Decluttering and Early Route Planning
Start by building a room-by-room inventory. Record furniture, appliances, boxes and anything unusually heavy or fragile. Add each item’s condition and intended room at your new home. Photos provide a useful condition record and can help you decide what is worth transporting.
Sort belongings into keep, sell, donate and dispose groups. Reducing the load now means less packing and fewer items to manage at delivery. Our guide to decluttering before a move offers a practical way to work through each room without shifting unwanted belongings from one home to another.
Your route also deserves an early review. Check truck access at both homes, including narrow roads, steep or unpaved driveways, low branches and limited parking. Ask apartment or condominium management about elevator reservations, loading hours and any documents they require from the mover.
Timing can affect the route. Late-August university move-ins may create traffic and parking changes around Ann Arbor and East Lansing. Spring weight restrictions can also affect some Michigan roads. If either address is on a restricted road, ask the local road agency whether a large moving truck can use it on your planned date.
RentCafe recommends booking long-distance movers eight to twelve weeks before the move. That extra time is useful for summer dates and other busy periods.
4 Weeks Out: Booking Licensed Movers and Securing On-Site Estimates
Four weeks before your tentative date, your inventory and access notes should be ready to share. We recommend contacting movers no later than this point, and earlier whenever possible, so you have a better chance of securing the date and vehicle availability you need.
We offer free on-site estimates. A walk-through lets us see the amount being moved, identify difficult access and discuss packing needs directly with you. Show the estimator everything that may go, including basement, garage, attic and outdoor items. Point out pianos, safes, antiques and oversized furniture rather than waiting until loading day.
Provide the complete origin and destination addresses. Explain stair counts, elevator rules, parking limits, long walks between the entrance and truck, and any gate or loading restrictions. Confirm which services appear in the written estimate and ask how changes to your inventory could affect charges.
Verify credentials before choosing any company. All-Time Moving Inc is fully licensed and insured. According to the Michigan Movers Association, intrastate carriers must have active operating authority and a valid USDOT number, with assigned credential numbers displayed on their power units. You should also review valuation and liability choices before signing; our guide to insurance and liability for Michigan moves explains what to look for.
All-Time Moving Inc provides a 10% discount for military service personnel and a 10% discount for senior citizens. Tell us when requesting your estimate if either discount applies to your move.

2 Weeks to 1 Week Out: Packing Safely and Checking Michigan Requirements
Packing should now move from occasional sorting to a clear daily schedule. Begin with decorations, books, spare linens and other things you will not need before arrival. Save everyday kitchenware, work supplies and personal care items for the final days.
Use small, sturdy boxes for books, canned goods and other dense belongings. Medium or large boxes are better for lighter items such as pillows and linens. Wrap dishes separately and place plates vertically rather than stacking them flat. Fill empty spaces so contents cannot shift, but do not make a box too heavy to lift safely.
Give every carton an inventory number, destination room and short contents description. Add “Fragile,” “This Side Up” or “Open First” where needed. Keep a matching list on your phone or on paper so you can identify a missing carton without opening everything.
Refrigerators and freezers need time to defrost, drain and dry. Plan to empty them at least 24 to 48 hours before transport. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for washing machines and other appliances, and arrange qualified help where a gas, water or electrical connection must be handled.
Do not pack gasoline, propane cylinders, lighter fluid, fireworks, ammunition, corrosive chemicals or other hazardous materials in household boxes. Contact your local household hazardous waste program for disposal guidance. Keep prescriptions, identification, cash, keys, important records and valuables with you rather than loading them on the truck.
Outdoor items need special attention. Michigan’s spongy moth quarantine guidance explains the federal requirements affecting outdoor household articles. Inspect grills, lawn furniture, trailers and garden equipment, remove egg masses, and complete any required documentation before transport.
Move Day: Furniture Protection, Loading and the Bill of Lading
On moving day, keep children and pets away from loading paths. Set aside your keys, phone chargers, medicine, documents and first-night bag before work begins. Confirm the destination address and the best phone number for reaching you during transit.
We handle each stage of an intrastate Michigan move, including packing, loading, transportation, unpacking and furniture placement when those services are part of your move. Our trucks are fully equipped, and we fully pad furniture to protect it from scratches and dents.
Walk through the home with the crew before loading starts. Review any recorded scratches, chips or dents on furniture and make sure the inventory reflects the correct starting condition. Once loading is complete, inspect closets, cabinets, the garage, basement and outdoor areas so nothing is left behind.
Read the Bill of Lading before signing it. Check your name, delivery contact, destination address, agreed services and item count. Ask about anything you do not understand, and keep your copy where you can reach it during the move. Do not pack it inside a carton.
Arrival and Delivery: Furniture Placement and Inventory Checks
At the new home, arrive before the moving truck whenever possible. Make sure the entrance is open, elevators are available and the truck has the agreed parking space. Place simple room signs where they can be seen from the entry.
We can unload belongings, unpack when arranged and place furniture at the new destination. Give placement directions as pieces enter the home. It is easier to position a sofa or bed correctly while the crew is handling it than to move it again later.
Check each box or item number against your inventory as it comes off the truck. Look for crushed cartons, punctures, moisture or new damage. If something is missing or damaged, note it on the delivery paperwork before signing. Take clear photographs and retain the item, its packaging and any proof of value while you ask the mover about the claims process.
Open the first-night boxes before less urgent cartons. Confirm that beds, essential kitchen items, toiletries and work supplies are accessible. Then make one final truck and property check before the crew leaves.
